Tummy Tuck Aftercare: How to Minimise Scarring

Tummy tuck or abdominoplasty surgery is a body-sculpting procedure. Most patients undergo the procedure with a specific look in mind as the end result. So, the thought of being left with scars that could affect the aesthetic you want can be daunting to some.

That’s why Dr Padovan and our team at Emerge take great care to ensure that you are equipped to handle your recovery and minimise the appearance of tummy tuck scars from the time your procedure begins.

Dr Padovan’s role

Dr Padovan is a highly trained and experienced surgeon. When he makes the incision at the start of your surgery, he works to minimise the length of the scar. He also makes the incision low enough that you can hide it under a bathing suit.

He takes great care when closing the incision to ensure the scar is kept as small and neat as possible. Again, he is a professional who has decades of experience.

What you can do to minimise scarring

You will receive comprehensive instructions from Dr Padovan on helping your scar heal as well as possible after surgery.

Many factors can contribute to how well your scar heals, such as your skin type, whether you smoke or not, and your age. However, by following Dr Padovan’s recovery directions with diligence, you’re giving your scar the best chance at healing efficiently.

Here are some general guidelines to follow:

  • Try and walk as soon as possible after your surgery to reduce swelling and the risk of blood clots
  • Refrain from smoking for at least 6 weeks
  • Follow a healthy diet including plenty of liquids, fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Refrain from lifting heavy items and avoid any strenuous activity for at least 6 weeks
  • Avoid any activity that stretches, bends or causes you to put pressure on your abdomen
  • Avoid any sexual activity for 3 weeks after your surgery

Use Vitamin E topically

Research suggests that using Vitamin E topically helps to improve the appearance of scars.

By applying 100% pure Vitamin E at least once a day for the first couple of months, you’re keeping your scar moisturised. This will help restore the skin’s elasticity, and the scar tissue will appear less dry and rough.

Massaging the Vitamin E into your skin (once the scar tissue has healed) will stimulate blood flow which can reduce redness and swelling and may relieve any itching.

Use SPF where necessary

Scars are made of new skin, so they react differently to the sun than normal skin. By applying sunscreen to your scar, you will prevent them from becoming darker than the surrounding skin.

It’s best to avoid sunning the are entirely. But if that isn’t possible, be sure to use a sunscreen made specifically for scars or something that is SPF 30 or higher, for at least one year after surgery.

Clean your scar daily

Keeping your scar clean and healthy will reduce its appearance and reduce your risk of infection.

Don’t let the thought of scarring stop you from discovering confidence

The thought of scarring can be scary. But with the combination of Dr Padovan’s extensive experience, his aftercare instructions and the tips above, your scar should heal well. You’ll also probably be too busy admiring your gorgeous new figure to notice it!
