Before, during and after SIPS surgery

The popularity of SIPS surgery is on the rise, and understandably so. While no surgery is risk-free and right for everybody, the SIPS produces some amazing benefits for patients. But the benefits aren’t all that should be considered when you’re looking into different kinds of weight loss surgery.

That’s why we’ve compiled this guide on some things to expect before, during and after your SIPS surgery with Emerge Surgical.

Before SIPS surgery

Some clinics will require that you undergo a pre-op diet before your weight loss surgery. This is due to the fact that it will help decrease the size of the liver, which lies over stomach — many surgeons claim this makes it easier for them to operate.

However, Dr Padovan is an extremely experienced, skilled surgeon with fellowship training. The size of the liver makes no difference to the success of his procedures. So, a pre-op diet is not a requirement! For more information, check out our blog on putting pre-op diets in the past.

However, it is recommended that you get into a healthy eating and exercise routine, so that you can feel your best going into the surgery, and have some good habits instilled for the time after your surgery.

During SIPS surgery

Once you have gone in for your surgery, Dr Padovan will perform the procedure in three steps:

  1. He performs the standard sleeve gastrectomy
  2. He divides the top part of your small bowel (the duodenum) just beyond your stomach
  3. He hooks up your small bowel to the duodenum so that over half of your bowel is bypassed. This reduces the absorption of calories you consume.

The surgery will leave you with a reduced eating capacity, and reduced levels of the hunger hormone, ghrelin. In your new digestive process, half the bowel will be bypassed, which will reduce the amount of calories you absorb.

After SIPS surgery

SIPS surgery patients usually only need to stay in hospital for 1-2 nights. Most patients will fully recover in 2-4 weeks.

You’ll have a number of follow-up appointments after your surgery, which are very important for you to attend. You’ll receive invaluable support and information about aftercare from Dr Padovan and our dietitian, Debra. These appointments will also help you instil healthy habits, ensuring you get the best results out of your surgery.

Specific post-operative care advice will vary slightly between patients.
