Everything you need to know about SIPS: A Refresher

Spring has sprung. We’ve left the cold and dreary winter behind us, stepped out of isolation and into the warmth of the sun. It is the season of renewal and starting over. Now is the perfect time to start the health and weight loss journey you might have been putting off!

So, we thought, what better time to refresh your knowledge of our world-class weight loss surgeries we offer to the people of Perth?

Over the next few months, we’ll be taking a closer look at some of our procedures that can help you get on track to feeling (and looking!) like the best version of yourself.

Let’s start with SIPS.

What is the SIPS procedure?

SIPS stands for Stomach Intestinal Pylorus-Sparing Surgery. It combines the benefits of both the sleeve gastrectomy and the gastric bypass, by decreasing the size of your stomach and bypassing part of the digestion process. Take a look:

In the first part of the procedure, Dr Padovan removes most of the stomach, leaving you with a reduced eating capacity and reduced levels of the hunger hormone, ghrelin.

In the second part of the surgery, the duodenum (first and shortest segment of the small intestine) is divided and connected to the small bowel. Consequently, in the digestion process, over half of the bowel is bypassed. This reduces the amount of calories you absorb.

What are the benefits of the SIPS procedure?

Please note that individual results may vary.

  • More weight loss compared to people who only had sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass
  • Beneficial effect on Type 2 diabetes
  • Ability to eat normally
  • No dumping syndrome
  • No increased risk of anastomotic ulcers
  • No increased risk of internal hernias
  • Great procedure for patients who have undergone a sleeve gastrectomy and have regained some weight or were dissatisfied with results

Am I suitable candidate for the SIPS procedure?

The SIPS procedure is a great option for certain patients.

Are you are a sleeve gastrectomy patient who has regained weight over several years, or were reasonably dissatisfied with the outcome? SIPS could be the perfect choice for you. It is also a great initial procedure for patients wanting a more powerful option than the sleeve gastrectomy, but would like to avoid possible adverse effects of the gastric bypass.

Unfortunately, SIPS is not suitable for patients with severe oesophageal reflux and Barrett’s oesophagus changes. A better option for you might be the conventional gastric bypass.
